A viewing room, not a sales room
Ottercloudyorchard is an independent informative website about natural stone sculpture for private collections and architecture. We write for collectors, architects and patrons who want to understand a commission before approaching a maker. We do not present a studio portfolio, offer sculpture for sale, arrange commissions or provide valuations.
Our point of departure is the relationship between geology and artistic intention. The grain of a block, the judgement of a carver, the character of a setting and the discipline of care belong to one conversation. Dividing them into four guides makes the subject easier to enter without pretending that the decisions are separate in practice.
How to read these pages
Begin with material choice if a particular stone has caught your attention. Read making to understand models, tools and approvals. Move to placement before a site or base is fixed. Return to stewardship while the work is still being planned, not only when it needs attention.
Illustrative commissioning examples are labelled as such. They describe a decision or a useful question, not completed projects, client relationships or evidence of services offered by this website. Material-detail photographs support observation; they are not presented as works made or represented by Ottercloudyorchard.
References and limits
We name real places, artists, institutions and standards to give readers a useful vocabulary and routes for further study. A reference is not an affiliation, endorsement or certification. Standards may be revised, and their applicability depends on the project. Historic examples can deepen looking without establishing the suitability of a new material or installation.
Useful starting points include the British Geological Survey for geological context, Icon for conservation practice, the Health and Safety Executive for workplace safety and Historic England for guidance connected with historic places.
General editorial guidance cannot replace examination of a block or artwork, engineering design, conservation assessment, legal advice or project-specific contracts. Where uncertainty affects safety, stability or irreversible treatment, bring in an appropriately qualified professional.
Corrections and correspondence
Precise language matters in a material with so much natural variation. If a passage appears inaccurate or unclear, tell us which page and statement you mean, and include a reliable reference where possible. Avoid sending private collection inventories, security arrangements or unnecessary personal information.
